As with many people who have become interested in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders I arrived at this point in my life by default rather than design. I would have known and cared nothing about thyroid disorders had I not been forced into the same hideous lifestyle in which many households with sufferers from undiagnosed hypothyroidism find themselves.

Both my husband and daughter became afflicted by hypothyroidism, exhibiting a constellation of symptoms over many years which went undiagnosed because of the massive NHS deficiencies in thyroid diagnostic techniques in the U.K. Even when we worked out for ourselves that they both needed thyroid and other endocrine replacement, we discovered that we were in fact on our own because their blood tests were always “normal” and they were refused help on the NHS. My wonderful husband Andrew died in 2004. He had been prescribed heart medication which I now know exacerbates a thyroid condition. My daughter is unable to work and is still seeking a resolution to her deep seated thyroid problems.
I now know that if their symptoms had been diagnosed early enough my husband would be alive today and my daughter (27) would be able to live her life to the full. That is why I am determined to help Thyroid UK ensure that other families are enabled to get early and accurate diagnosis and treatment of their thyroid condition. |
