Thyroid peroxidase antibody test (TPO) - £50.00
Many people that contact me have had blood tests done for FT4 and TSH and even if the FT4 level is low, their GP has not done a thyroid antibody test to check for Hashimoto’s Disease.
Autoimmune disease of the thyroid is detected by testing for antibodies in the blood that attack the thyroid gland. Antithyroid Peroxidase Antibody or TPO Ab (Ab is short for antibody) - also known as Antithyroid Microsomal Ab - is associated with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s Disease/autoimmune thyroiditis). TPO Ab are found raised in Hashimoto’s disease. In Hashimoto’s, the cells of the thyroid gland are attacked and slowly destroyed. Patients with raised levels of TPO antibodies will experience deterioration of their thyroid function. Elevated levels of TPO antibodies are found in virtually all cases of Hashimoto’s disease and in around 65% of patients with Graves’ disease.
We are very pleased to inform you that we are now working with Cambridge Nutritional Sciences Ltd. and can offer you a quick and easy way to test to check your thyroid antibody status.
CNS tell us, “The CNS Autoantibody Thyroid Test uses ELISA technology to measure autoantibodies to human thyroid peroxidase (TPO). Thyroid peroxidase is an important enzyme involved in the multiple steps of thyroid hormone synthesis. The presence of anti-TPO autoantibodies unequivocally confirms autoimmune thyroiditis and they are frequently the only indication of underlying disease. The detection of anti-TPO autoantibodies is evidence against goiter or hyperthyroidism of non-autoimmune nature.
The CNS TPO Test is more sensitive and specific than older haemagluttination tests based on microsomal antigens. The CNS TPO Test is subject to external quality control and is CE marked. Early detection and therapy can avoid the onset of the symptoms of overt hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.”
The CNS test requires only a pin-prick blood sample, which is so easy to do using their instructions. Results are available within 10 working days and are sent direct to you.
If you have symptoms, you haven’t been tested for Hashimoto’s and your other thyroid tests are normal, it may be a good idea to have this test done.
All you have to do is to telephone CNS to order. Give them our name and they will send you the kit. You will then need to send a cheque with the sample. It’s as easy as that!
If your result comes back positive, you can take the result along to your GP and show him. Hopefully, the doctor will start to do other tests to confirm the possibility of autoimmune thyroid disease. If you would like this test, please contact:
