Since hyperthyroidism can cause osteoporisis, and hypothyroidism may cause problems too, it would be wise to be screened for this.
You may find that your GP tries to do tests that are not normally done by his local lab and his local laboratory will not do them. (We often find that some areas will do, say, T4 and TSH or TSH alone and that most labs will not do a T3 test).
We have been told by a hospital Complaints Officer that GP’s should put on the form as many details as possible ie “patient may be unable to convert T4 to T3” and that the T3 test is more expensive and they will not do them unless a definite reason is given. If your GP still has no luck, then try telephoning the Hospital Complaints Officer. If you explain your position, they may be more helpful.
We have found that in some cases you can get tests done privately at your local NHS or Private hospital. It is not too expensive and it may be a way of finding whether your T3 levels are low or not.
